Did you know... that the region of the pampas which covers the provinces of La Pampa, west of Buenos Aires, south of Cordoba and Santa Fe and east of San Luis was the battleground were first conquistadores, later colonial spanish forces and finally the federal government, all fought battle after battle to conquer what was now valuable territory? Facts is that after the discovery of salt reservoirs authorities from the federal government realized these lands had great economic value. Campaigns to dominate the local tribes went from 1833 to 1880. During the presidency of Avellaneda, Adolfo Alsina -the war minister- organized a series of large attacks to subdue the powerful tribes of NAMUNCURA, PINCEN and the RANQUELES. Natives would continually test the argentine settlements in the confines of the "pampa humeda" through what was known as MALONES. Alsina acted quickly and created an excavated frontline that ran for over 700 km from Bahia Blanca all the way to southern Cordoba. The purpose was to create a barrier that would impede the stealing of cattle by the native indians, later herd to the west (Chile) for trading. These cattle was called CIMARRON.
