Lanin National Park (379,000 hectares) was created in 1937. It has over 35 lakes among which 'Huechulafquen' offers serene and extreme beauty. The City of San Martin de los Andes is located in the nearby area surrounded by picturesque lakes. South of Lanin there is the national park of Nahuel Huapi with its closest favorite vacation spot, Bariloche. This whole area is a paradise of beauty and among the many lakes that are the main attractions are: Hermoso, Lacar, Villarino, Tromen, Falkner and the earlier mentioned Huechulafquen. Closer to Bariloche equally gorgeous scenic views may be had at Espejo, Correntoso, Traful, Mascardi, Gutierrez and Roca lakes together with visits to Victoria Island.

San Martin de los Andes -with over 22,000 habitants (as of last census of 2001)- is one of the main destinations in Neuquen. This small town was founded in 1883 even though it officially exists since 1898. It was not until the early 70's that its touristic possibilities were explored by a group of investors together with local authorities who focused on making San Martin de los Andes a destination for skiers by developing Cerro Chapelco infraestructure.

Nahuel Huapi national park originally had 43,000 hectares which were later expanded to 785,000 hectares by the federal government. During the 40's this was considered an exclusive resort for the richer families in Argentina many of which established their own ranches in the area. During the 50's and 60's tourism expanded to the middle class and a new group of visitors emerged from Brazil. By the 70's it became a favorite destination for students during the winter recess, specifically for skiing at Cerro Catedral. Today, Bariloche has evolved into an international vacation spot that can rival any resort in Europe and the Americas with a miriad of attractions. A complement to this tour can be seen at the Bariloche vacation package with only 4 nights.
