Ushuaia is the southernmost City in the world. One of its main attractions is called the "train to the end of the world" by which visitors can see breathtaking views of snow covered mountains and a vast natural forest. Ushuaia is located in the island of Tierra del Fuego which is separated from mainland by the straight. of Magellan (estrecho de Magallanes). The best way to get to Ushuaia is by plane flying from Buenos Aires or via Rio Gallegos. Adventurous visitors can also get there by bus/car by first crossing into Chile and taking the ferry boat to cross the straight (2 options: Punta Arenas or Monte Aymond). This option should be considered carefully as it implies entering yet another country with all custom and passport implications as well as a scheduling dilemma. The ferry reaches chilean territory in the island so visitors should drive into the argentine side and then head towards Ushuaia via Rio Grande.

Tierra del Fuego is very peculiar in that it is the only territory where the Andes ridge (cordillera de Los Andes) runs longitudinally splitting it into distinctive geographic areas. The northern half - where the Onas once lived- is flat, much like all patagonia (estepa) whereas the region to the south -where Ushuaia is located- from Lake Fagnano to the Beagle channel has all the characteristics of an andean formation and used to be home for the ancient Yamanas (Yaghanes). Contrary to popular belief, the weather in Ushuaia is not freezing cold and it would be rare for temperatures to drop below 10 F in winter. Click for current weather conditions in Ushuaia. Among the many attractions in this part of the island are the national park Tierra del Fuego, lake Escondido, lake Fagnano, typical patagonic ranches, glacier formations and the train to the end of the world, not too mention making this city a beach head for traveling to Antartida. Every year there is also a group of skiing enthusiasts who spent time is Ushuaia ski centers. For a different feel explore northwest Argentina.
