Some of the best argentine wines are produced in Cafayate, a small town south of Salta nearby the Calchaquies Valley. Jujuy, in turn, spreads over a vast archeological bed where rupestrian art, paintings and engravings on rocks are a testimony to human groups that inhabited the area 9000 years ago. This historical background has been the basis for the peculiar architecture of the main cities in the region: Salta and San Salvador de Jujuy whose buildings present a colonial facade, specially in Salta. The highest concentration of population can be found to the east, where the "valle de Lerma" lies. This is the most fertile area in the northwest where tobacco is cultivated. The south and southerwestern sectors of Salta occupy the region known as "valle calchaquies", a past settlement of ancient civilizations. The north and northwest sector forms the Humauaca ravine (quebrada de Humauaca) through which the "royal route to Peru" used to circulate, during the times of the spanish colonization. This area together with the Puna (both in Salta and Jujuy) are living testimonies of the cultural activity that dates prior to the arrival of Columbus (pre-hispanic art) back to the Incas time.

Interesting cities and small towns to visit while in the region are Cafayate. Tafi del Valle and Cachi all located in Salta, which is also known as great place for outdoor activities such trout fishing. And while in Jujuy, Tilcara, Purmamarca, Humauaca, Iruya and La Quiaca. The coldest part in the northwest is La Quiaca and Humauaca with lows at around 40F during winter while Jujuy (see historical weather for Jujuy) and Salta (cities) maybe 50F. During summer temperatures can 75/80F. Current weather in Salta and current weather in Jujuy. The historical weather pattern for Salta is here.
