Is it necessary to rent a car to see the glacier national park and other sights in El Calafate area or can I just take tours? Thanks | ||

frances, I highly discourage doing this on your own unless you are an expert hiker. I still have to meet anyone who walk the glaciers on their own. For this, I would use guided tours. Other opinions are welcome. | ||

Frances, if you are considering a hike on the glaciers alone, I do not recommend it. I have never walked the glaciers but I just happened to have watched a special yesterday on the Discovery Channel about someone who did. He did it with a guided group. From what I saw and what was said, I humbly believe it would be borderline suicidal and definitely ill advised and reckless. | ||

I rely on rental cars in the US but in Argentina, you can always find a taxi or driver for a fraction of the cost and they are there when you need them and you do not have to worry about parking, picking up, dropping off and buying fuel. It is a fun country, you will love it. |
