This social problem has been brewing for 40 years and is not one of immigrants. These squatters in Villa Soldati and other areas in the South of BA speak with a porteno accent you can cut with a knife. They are Argentinians born and raised in the squalid slums of the city. Sure, some are Bolivian and Peruvian but the greater majority are are porteno. (sorry, can't do tildas). I have no solution. But to ignore it or pretend it is something it isn't does make it go away. But Clarin has done something that is morally questionable They have associated it with the horrible drug quarter of Rio, where dozens were shot to death in a military raid. It is not that. It is simply very poor families leaving the squaller of their burning hot cramped and congested slum apartments and setting up tents in public parks. Police and guns are not going to solve this problem that is typical of every country in South America-including the IMF favorite, Chili. |
