My family is planning a trip to Argentina for the end of June/beginning of July 2008, for a total of 13 nights. Currently, we are planning to stay 3-4 nights in Buenos Aires, 2 nights at Iguazu Falls, and the rest is where I am running into trouble. We are interested in visiting 2-3 more spots, but cannot decide among Salta, Mendoza, Bariloche, Puerto Madryn, El Calafate, and Ushuaia. Please help us decide. This will be our first trip to Argentina and South America. We are interested in seeing a variety of places and getting a sense of the country as a whole. I understand the great distances between places, and will be flying from one to another. Thank you in advance for all your advice. |

Welcome! If you do 3 nights in BA and 2 nights in Iguazu you are left with 8 more nights. You may have very cold weather in Ushuaia/Calafate with very short days. I would leave these destinations for a second trip. In Puerto Madryn, you may miss some of the whale action that starts later in the year, but can still be considered as an option. In my view, the best 2 options for those additional nts would be: a) northwest: a combo of Tucuman, Salta and Jujuy to explore the "Valle Calchaquies" as well as ravines regions and become acquainted with some incaic traditions. b) Andes region: a combo of Mendoza / Bariloche. But for this, you should be very comfortable with snow (you probably are) and perhaps even consider some skiing. Either option may free up one more night for BA. |

Thank you, Roberto, for your advice. Just out of curiosity, how cold is in in Ushuaia and El Calafate at the end of June/beginning of July? How much snow and rain? In Chicago, temperatures during our winter go as low as -10 C to -20 C, sometimes for as long as two to three weeks straight. Our lake and rivers often freeze during our winters. Thank you again. |

I sent a lengthy reply to SL Chicago concerning a trip to Argentina we just did 6 weeks ago with our two children. Unfortunately, communications in this part of the world (Kenya) don't always get through. Please let me know if you received my message. |

SL, independently of katherine's private reply you can study historical and current weather for those destinations by visiting the argentine weather page. |
