We are going to be in Argentina in March but will be flying out of Santiago. Can you rent a car in Mendoza and drop it off at the Santiago Airport? How long of a drive is this? What sites do you recommend that we visit along the way? |

Jill, welcome! Mendoza - Santiago de Chile is anywhere from 350km to 400km depending on which route you take. So slightly more than 220 miles but probably a slow journey. The international companies most likely can do this. Check with Alamo which has offices both in Mendoza and at Santiago's airport. Alamo: (54)261-429-3111 Budget Rent a car: (54)261-425-3114 Dollar Rent A Car: (54)261-425-0430 Avis: (54)261-420-3178 |

Hi Jill.. I have a site that shows you the sites to see along the way.. It is here www.ranabtawi.com You have to scroll down the page till you reach the map, and also IŽd recommend using firefox browser to view it.. It would be nice to take it as a full day trip and come back to Mendoza, rather than take it on the way out.. youŽd be sorry to do that. Along the way : you can do rafting, see the beautiful potrerillos lake, Puente del Inca, a very interesting geological formation on the river(Not to be missed... close to the border with Chile), and the statue of Christ. There is also Penitentes on the way, a medium size skiing center. I am not sure that you can leave the car rental in the airport in Santiago.. Cheers |

Thank you Roberto. Would flying be a better option? We are flying Delta from the US into BA and out of Santiago. Can we buy a one way ticket on an airline while there from Mendoza to Santiago? |

Jill..I just moved to Mendoza from Wisconsin USA and have enjoyed portions of the trip that Riyad has suggested and it is becoming a weekly venture for me over that route. In addition, I have flown from Santiago to Mendoza and should you do that make sure you have a camera readily available as some of my favorite photos are from the air during the 50 minute trip.......Roberto's suggestion regarding the international companies for car rental might be true as when I was inquireing about rentals for a trip by car from Mendoza to Buenos Aires it was possible..I hope you enjoy your trip.. Jill, a one way Mendoza-Santiago will be approx usd $384 (taxes included) with LAN non-stop. With Argentine Airlines you will be connecting in Baires, so not good. You can drop off the car at Santiago airport for a surcharge, possibly. But you may have to contact each rental car in Mendoza. |

> is it easier to take a bus or rent a car for the travel? Both are easy but with a bus you don't have to worry about driving and can enjoy the scenic view. Done throughout the day, this is a marvelous trip. I think you can also overnight this route from December through March but my suggestion is a bus during the day (before 13:00 or 14:00). The prices for the bus ticket (1 way) are less than usd $20. You can check with: CATA internacional EL RAPIDO internacional Don't know of any chilean bus company but the above may serve as guidance. |

Hi all, I'm traveling from Santiago to Mendoza next week, by bus. What kind of climate should I expect on the road? Which is the maximum altitude reached? Thank you so much. |

Hi Elisa, I assume you are crossing through Puente del Inca. January is the hottest month... I think it is safe to consider temperatures between 17 to 20 C but conditions can vary widely. On December and January maximum T reaches 28 C. If I remember correctly Puente del Inca is at 3200/3300 mts (10,800 ft) above sea level. You could also call "Gendarmeria" in Mendoza and ask for weather information the day you are crossing at Ph. 54-261-4320110 |

Yes mosst car companies can accomodate - you should contact the ones listed at the top of this thread or perhaps Roberto's agency http://www.travelsur.net/ handles this also? or contact www.Mendoza.com.ar The tricky part is that each car rental company has a fleet of cars, and only some of the cars have documented "permission" and insurance to cross the border so availability may be limited. |
