Hi - I was born on Dec 19 1984. I just applied for argentine citizenship (via my mother) and was fingerprinted, and signed paperwork. I am currently waiting for my DNI and passport. If I go to live/work/etc in Argentina will I be required to do military service? Thanks. | ||

Hey Richard, military service is not mandatory anymore. If I remember correctly, Menem switched to a voluntary system in 1994 like the one in the US after an incident in patagonia where a soldier got killed. Here is the law: http://www.mindef.gov.ar/legislacion_servmilitar.h tml But there seems to be some pressure to change this again by the opposition. So you may have to watch this closely if they win the coming elections. CK wants to keep the voluntary system. You can read more here. All that said, I think being 26+ puts you one the safe camp. | ||
