My friend and I will be ending a tour at El Calafate Airport on January 6 around mid day and need to be back there January 8th at 7PM to begin a trek. Could we get a trout fishing trip in that time slot and what would it cost and where would we go?

Typically, we require many weeks (months in adavnce) for bookings for fishing trips. Guides need to plan in advance.

At present, the closest places we offer are in Esquel, which is at the southern trout-fishing region which covers San Martin de Los Andes to the north and Esquel to the South. In Esquel, there are a few really good areas to fish trout, unpopulated lakes and streams, starting with Rio Grande (Futaleufú), a brawny river that flows across the border into the Pacific, and is best floated to Lago Willmanco, at 2,450 feet and in private property, which has been stocked with Shasta rainbows since 1988, and catches between 8-10lbs can be expected.

Further south, the Rio Pico area, set in pristine wilderness, offers superb fishing (including Pacific salmon) in lakes and rivers, for those who have more time and really want to get away from any signs of civilisation. This where our guides station, mainly.

A trip like the one you want is possible but may require more days. We first have to fly you into Bariloche and then drive you down to Esquel, specifically to Trevelin. There are no direct flights from Calafate to Esquel. So you should expect to lose one entire day in the journey... Once in Trevelin, we can contact our guides for any tour fishing trips. But it looks too tight regarding the amount of time you can spare. I'd say, your biggest obstacle is that you can only devote 2 days for this... We are in the process of developing closer relationships with trout fishing guides in Calafate. We have just found a bewly licensed company with permits to fish Los Glaciare National Park and we are finishing all details. Next time you contact us we will know excatly how to handle half day and full day fishing trips in Calafate, in particular for fishing rainbow trouts.
